Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Accounts Assistant / Bookkeeper to support day-to-day running of our finance function. This role is ideal for someone with strong bookkeeping experience who enjoys ownership of transactional finance processes, month-end support, and payroll coordination within a varied SME environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing accounts to Trial Balance level, coordinating payroll information with our external payroll bureau, and supporting smooth financial operations across the business.

Key Responsibilities
Maintain accurate purchase, sales, and general ledgers
Prepare accounts to Trial Balance level for external accountants and management reporting
Process invoices, receipts, supplier payments, and bank transactions
Reconcile bank accounts, company credit cards and employee expenses
Coordinate monthly payroll submissions with the external payroll bureau, including overtime, absence, starters, leavers, and salary changes
Review payroll reports for accuracy, process salary and pension payments, and respond to payroll-related queries
Support month-end close through journals, accruals, prepayments, and balance sheet reconciliations
Prepare VAT returns and supporting schedules
Assist with weekly and monthly supplier, contractor, and expense payment runs
Monitor customer balances and support credit control activities
Assist with audit queries and provide supporting documentation when required
Respond to internal and third-party finance queries
Provide ad hoc support to senior management and bid teams
Skills & Experience
At least 12 months experience in a bookkeeping, accounts assistant, or finance support role
Strong knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles
Experience preparing accounts to Trial Balance level
Experience coordinating payroll information with an external payroll bureau
Good working knowledge of VAT, reconciliations, and payment processing
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software such as Xero
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage confidential information
AAT Level 2 qualified, or currently studying towards, however qualified by experience candidates will also be considered
